2020 Fall Plenary Artist Statement

Every name in this installation—titled 20 in 20, have two things in common. They are Black and they were killed by the police in the year 2020. Throughout the Summer, Black people in the United States were killed at 3.3x the rate of their white counterparts, representing 28% of officer related deaths. At the time of this installation, 1 in 1000 Black men are expected to die at the hands of the police during their lifetime. And the number 6 cause of death for Black men in America is the police. These death rates represent a public epidemic that conditions and normalizes Black Americans as criminals who threaten the livelihood of white supremacist structures. Policing is planked by public education on one side and the prison system on the other. 20 in 20 is both an act of remembrance and an act of systemic resistance. It is a visual reminder of the weight of anti-Blackness and systemic racism that we are carrying into our futures. I lift these names up and call upon you to join me in developing systemic strategies of resistance. In remembering. In re-writing the narrative for Black people in America. In re-designing the structures that stunt our human relations. We must re-imagine the possibilities. We must continue to #SayTheirNames.
