2016 Curriculum Institute

Curriculum is the heart of what we do as educators. The Curriculum Institute is designed to bring together teams of individuals working on curriculum – administrators, faculty, and classified staff – and to provide a platform for interactive learning by all attendees.  Informational presentations, direct training and guidance, and interaction with Chancellor’s Office staff make this Institute the most popular of the Academic Senate events.  Join us in Anaheim to receive updates on important current curriculum topic and to learn ways to improve and develop local curriculum processes.

Pre-session:  The Curriculum Committee is excited to announce that this year’s event will once again include an optional pre-session workshop on Wednesday, July 6. In the afternoon there will be workshops designed for curriculum chairs, administrators, and curriculum specialists who are new to curriculum.  The more seasoned curriculum enthusiast may find it beneficial as well. Additionally, there will be a morning workshop on the CTE Data Unlocked Initiative.  The Data Unlocked workshop will run from 10:00 to 12:00, and the afternoon workshops for curriculum chairs, administrators, and curriculum specialistswill run from 2:00 to 5:00.  The cost of attending the pre-session workshop is included in your registration fee.  However, you must submit a separate registration for the pre-session workshop and be a registered attendee for the Curriculum Institute.
 

Notice for CTE Data Unlocked Pre-Session Attendees:
During this workshop, attendees may be asked to access LaunchBoard data for their colleges.  Therefore, attendees are strongly encouraged to bring their laptops or tablet devices to this workshop.  Also, in order to access LaunchBoard data, attendees must have established a LaunchBoard account prior to July 5. The Faculty Leadership Institute is the cornerstone of the Academic Senate’s governance training.  Created to assist new senate leaders navigate the complexity of local governance as well as become versed in state issues, the Faculty Leadership Institute brings seasoned leaders together to share tips and tools for new leaders to successfully lead their senate and influence their college policies.  We highly encourage new and experienced leadership to join us for lively discussions about basic college governance and exciting state issues.

Noncredit Regional Meeting - South April 16, 2016

The 2015-16 Noncredit Committee would like to hold another set of regional meetings this spring.  The intent is to share information with the field about noncredit basics and the potential for an expansion of noncredit to address objectives within Student Equity Plans, Student Success and Support Program Plans, Adult Education Block Grants, the Basic Skills Initiative, and the Workforce Taskforce recommendations.

Are you interested in Online Education?  Do you have questions about accreditation, accessibility, and effective contact in online courses? These questions, and more, will be answered at the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges Online Education Regionals, being held on Friday, April 8 at College of San Mateo and Saturday, April 9 at Glendale College.  The program will include a general session on “What to Expect When You’re Expecting…An Accreditation Visiting Team”, updates on the Online Education Initiative, and other important information for faculty, staff, and administrators who work in online education (and even those who do not!).  Breakouts will involve a follow up panel to the accreditation general session with colleagues who have recently gone through an accreditation visit, accessibility, effective practices in online education, and more.  Registration is free; more information, including the full program, can be found here:


If you would like to attend the OE Regional Meeting - we will be doing any further registrations on-site.


Parking permits will be emailed to those who register.  Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

There is no charge to attend the OE Regional.  We do require that you cancel your registration if you can not attend. Any cancellations submitted after April 2nd will be assessed a $25 cancellation fee. All no-shows will also be assessed the $25 cancellation fee.  Refunds will not be granted for cancellations after the cancellation date or for no-shows.   Please review the Senate Cancellation Policy here.

Healthy Curriculum: Getting your curriculum into shape and keeping it that way

Curriculum is the heart of what we, as educators, do. Keeping our curriculum healthy requires our colleges to stretch, tumble, roll, drill, run, maneuver, and persevere through the curriculum race. Whether you choose to build noncredit endurance, boost Career Technical Education (CTE) potential, venture into innovative activities, or get an overview of heart-healthy curriculum, this year’s curriculum institute will explore topics intended to help everyone keep curriculum healthy in spite of the changing environment in which we live.

Noncredit/Curriculum Regional Meetings

The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges is excited to announce our first ever Noncredit Curriculum Regional Meetings! The meetings will be Friday, March 20 at Foothill College and Saturday, March 21 at Cerritos College. In the 15-16 academic year, the funding for some noncredit courses (Career Development and College Preparation) will be equal to credit courses. Due to these funding changes, CTE initiatives and the restructuring of adult and continuing education, colleges will need to use this opportunity to examine their noncredit and credit courses and assess how they can best serve the needs of their students.

We will begin the day with a presentation on the nuts and bolts of noncredit curriculum and programs. John Stanskas, the Senate’s AB 86 workgroup representative, will offer some insights as to how funding changes can impact opportunities for our students in basics skills and CTE programs. After lunch, we will ask college teams to discuss the viability and opportunity of noncredit instruction to benefit their students and how their college’s decision-making processes may impact the discussion at their colleges. Curriculum committee members and participants from colleges with noncredit programs will be on hand to provide guidance about the opportunities and challenges in noncredit. The goal of this session is for participants to draft a working plan to help colleges make informed decisions about the appropriate curricular offerings at their colleges.

We encourage you to bring a team of faculty, senate leaders, curriculum chairs, and administrators who are making decisions about building their noncredit programs and evaluating curriculum.  Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required so we can ensure appropriate lunch accommodations. When you register, please identify which of your team members are faculty and which are administrators.

Online Education Regional Meetings

The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges and the Online Education Committee are pleased to announce that the first ever Online Education Regional Meetings!  The meetings will be Friday, March 20 in the north and Saturday, March 21 in the south.  Meeting, location and registration information can be found below. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required.  We encourage you to bring teams from your colleges, including senate presidents, curriculum chairs, online education faculty, distance education coordinators, instructional designers and administrators that oversee online education.  Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. 

 

The morning will be dedicated to general sessions with presentations and updates from the Chancellor’s Office and the Academic Senate, including information on curriculum processes for online courses, accreditation, regulations, professional development and effective practices for institutions.  In the afternoon, breakout sessions will focus on range of issues including the “nuts and bolts” of online education, effective practices for quality online instruction, and online education “landmines”.  If you cannot attend in person, we will be live webcasting the afternoon breakout sessions.  So, come and join us for a great day of important and timely information.  I hope to see you there!
