The 09-10 committee prioritized the Library Standards and Online Counseling papers higher than the student athletes paper and, as a consequence due to lack of time, this resolution was not addressed. Update 6/25/2015: Deferred to the Taskforce on PE, 2014-2015.
Whereas, The community colleges are committed to help all students whose goals are to transfer to a four-year university to develop their academic potentials by providing necessary resources;
Whereas, Little comprehensive research has been published regarding the academic needs and support systems necessary for the underprepared California community college student athletes; and
Whereas, The standards required by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the Commission on Athletics (COA), and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) exceed community college transfer requirements;
Resolved, That the Academic Senate prepare a comprehensive paper regarding student athletes that would address the obstacles and challenges they face in achieving academic success (AA degree and/or transfer), analyze demographic data and student equity factors, and recommend model support programs.
